Through a series of coincidences, she ends up taking over as the local land god after the previous one, Mikage, abdicates his post. Nanami must learn how to be a land god, and deal with the various obstacles and challenges that come with the job. Along the way, she meets and befriends various yokai, including a fox spirit named Tomoe.

The story of Kamisama Love is set in a high school where the students are gods and goddesses. The protagonist, Aiko, is a human who is in love with the school’s top god, Takeru. When Takeru is betrothed to another god, Aiko makes a deal with the school’s head god to become his god. In exchange, she must help him with his duties. As she gets to know Takeru better, she begins to fall in love with him. However, she realizes that she can never be with him because she is not a god.
