Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun

Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Izumi Tsubaki. The series began serialization in Shogakukan’s Monthly Flowers magazine in the June 2011 issue. It has been collected in twelve tankōbon volumes as of October 2015. A 12-episode anime television series adaptation by Dogakobo aired in Japan between July and September 2014.

The story of Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun follows high school girl Sakura Chiyo as she develops a crush on fellow classmate Umetaro Nozaki. Sakura musters up the courage to confess her feelings to Nozaki but, much to her chagrin, he mistakes her for a fan and gives her an autograph. Sakura then learns that Nozaki is actually the popular shoujo mangaka behind her favorite manga, Monthly Girls’ Romance.

In order to get closer to Nozaki and better understand him, Sakura begins helping him with his manga. She quickly discovers that the process of creating manga is a lot more complicated than she ever could have imagined. Over time, Sakura also comes to develop feelings for another boy in her class, Mikoto Mikoshiba. As she navigates her own complicated love life, Sakura also tries to help Nozaki with his own romantic entanglements.

The story of Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun is a comedic look at the challenges and tribulations of young love. It is also a love letter to the world of shoujo manga and the people who create it.
